Why is Xenical prescribed?

Orlistat belongs to a class of drugs known as atorvastatin. It works by blocking the enzyme that breaks up fat in the stomach. This prevented some fats from being absorbed andugs the liver's ability to produce the body's fat-soluble vitamins.

Objective:The aim of this study was to assess whether patients receiving orlistat therapy with orlistat (Xenical, Roche) showed improvement in BMI (BMI) with orlistat compared to placebo. Methods: We studied a population consisting of patients aged 18 to 64 years, who received orlistat (Xenical, Roche) for a 12-week treatment course and followed up for 1 year. The BMI of the patients at baseline was assessed as an indicator of the clinical status. We evaluated the patients in the study who were not on orlistat therapy and had a BMI of 27 or more. We then evaluated the patient's clinical status using the Hamilton-Yates Index (HAM-YI) and waist circumference. Results: Of the 26 patients enrolled, 16 were found to be obese, 8 of whom were on orlistat and 8 on placebo, and the rest were healthy, normal weight, or overweight. The mean BMI of the patients at baseline was 26.7, and after 1 year of treatment, there were 27, 22, and 12 overweight or obese, respectively. There was no significant difference between orlistat and placebo in mean BMI at baseline. Mean waist circumference increased significantly, from 0.3 cm (0.2 to 0.7) in the baseline group to 0.4 cm (0.3 to 0.6) in the treatment group. Results of the baseline population were similar to those in the study. However, after 1 year, the mean waist circumference decreased to 0.5 cm (0.2 to 0.9) in the placebo group, and to 0.2 cm (0.1 to 0.8) in the orlistat group. In the orlistat treatment group, mean waist circumference increased to 0.7 cm (0.4 to 1.6) and 0.4 cm (0.4 to 1.3) at baseline, and to 1 cm (0.3 to 0.8) at baseline, respectively. In the placebo group, mean waist circumference increased to 0.8 cm (0.4 to 1.8) at baseline and to 1 cm (0.5 to 1.5) at baseline, and to 1 cm (0.3 to 0.8) at baseline, respectively. There was no significant difference between orlistat and placebo in mean waist circumference after 1 year. Conclusion: We did not find significant differences between orlistat and placebo in mean BMI after 1 year. Although the difference was statistically significant, it was probably due to the smaller sample size. The study was conducted in a small number of patients, with the results being relatively consistent with the results in the original study.

It is important to note that this is not an FDA-approved indication and is not FDA-approved for use in the United States. The efficacy and safety of orlistat in adults have not been established. Methods:We examined a population consisting of patients aged 18 to 64 years who had been prescribed orlistat (Xenical, Roche) for a 12-week treatment course and followed up for 1 year. A total of 1084 patients were enrolled from 3 clinical sites in the United States. All patients were given an informed consent form, and the patients provided their medical history, lifestyle assessment, and pharmacological data at baseline. We also evaluated BMI at baseline. We analyzed baseline and follow-up data to determine if there were any differences between orlistat and placebo. We used the data to adjust for baseline BMI based on the HAM-YI, the body weight, and waist circumference (WCT) measurements. The data was then analyzed using the software program SPSS® (IBM®) version 20.0. The baseline data were collected and analyzed with the intention-to-treat approach. Statistical significance was assumed at P<0.05. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS®.

Results:During a baseline period of 2.7 years, there were no significant differences in the baseline BMI among patients receiving orlistat (Xenical, Roche) in either group. There were also no significant differences in mean waist circumference between orlistat and placebo (P<0.001).
